This is a video of me drawing the latest comic, sped up really fast, pretty much like the videos Meredith made for Octopus Pie! (most notably this one)

Wow!

You've got this whole system; I've never been able to manage that. It would probably happen naturally if I had a better work ethic.

That's Photoshop, right? How have you got it set up? I wish I could zoom in on this video.

Thanks for sharing!

I need to post the larger version of the video somewhere. It's only around 70 megs.

But yeah, CS3 has these neat panes for all the tools that can be arranged in various ways. I know a lot of artists probably prefer to have them collapsed while working, but I find it easier to have them open all the time. From top to bottom, it's the Actions window (with recorded actions used to apply screentones mostly), History, Preset tools (mostly for brush sizes), and Layers.

Super fucking neat!!! Good job!

Holy crap, that blew me away, Josh.

Oh, and what did you record that with?

I used Camtasia Studio, which is pretty decent, though so far I've only used its recording function. It has features to edit and compress videos and whatnot, but I went back to VirtualDub and Audacity for that. Camtasia seemed really slow.

Thanks!
This is IMMENSELY useful!
Cheers!

I've watched a few of these, and damn, you go through a bit of a process to get a comic done. Especially when it comes to doing it three times a week.

I salute you Mr. Lesnick.

I echo this comment; this is an incredible amount of work, especially for free, especially for (occasionally) jerk fans. "Thank you" isn't nearly strong enough, "salute" is definitely a lot closer.

Am I the only one who got a trailer for Blake's 7 instead of the correct video?

Anyhoo, once the correct one was found, I must say, it's very interesting to see you in action. Your method is very suited to Photoshop.

Embedded YouTubes can act funny on LJ friends lists. =P

So.

This is that... power of technology.

I see now. The difference between us.

Very impressive! Do you have a blueprint going into this, or are you flying by the seat of your pants to begin with?
Also, about how long does it take you to do a whole comic not-sped-up?

This was about 4 hours work, which isn't too bad. It took a bit longer back when I was averaging 15 panels per comic.

Usually I don't script comics, but I have a clear idea for them in my head. The sketchy comic is usually what artists consider thumbnails, which are redrawn in more detail later as layouts, and it's those layouts that are penciled and inked over in the final art. But I always skip a step and consider the thumbnails and layouts one in the same, drawing directly over those.

This was actually a bit of an unusual comic as I rewrote a lot of it while doing the layout, which doesn't happen all that often. Originally I was just going to have Yumi briefly describe her story to the girls, but keeping the whole scene within the vet's lab would have been a bit drab, and opted for a flashback scene instead. Some material meant for this comic will get pushed into the next comic, and it wasn't supposed to end on Otra's awkward laugh, but it worked out better as a callback to comic 576.

Seriously though, usually these are planned well enough so there isn't THAT much thinking while drawing the actual comic... hahaha.

"Of all that is written I love only what a man has written with his blood"- Nietzsche

Holy crude, you even pull up reference pics for the littlest things. THAT's dedication. :O (I'd just make up crap. lol)

And the TOOLS.. you have EVERYTHING out.. oh lordy, I am behind the times.. (Just Navigator/Layers/History for me..)

TL;DR lucy & yumi gives me bonarz.

All I can say is that if SA was my homepage, I would never get anything done.

Now that I'm done watching it, I'm mostly impressed that you seem to have no pencils process whatsoever, after you thumbnail everything the inks just get dropped on there. I can't imagine anything I draw looking any good if I tried that.

Yeah, it has its ups and downs, but my preference is to keep the inking process spontaneous so that I can stay into it. It means messing up and correcting stuff a LOT, but hey, it's easier with computers.

That's really impressive Josh. Damn it, videos like this make me want to return to webcomics and try them digitally.

No good could ever come of that. ><

The detail you go to is amazing.

Wow. It takes me 4 hours just to do a single decent drawing - scanned and shaded. I can't imagine cramming an entire comic into that time.

You, sir, are a MACHINE. An awesome comic-pumping-out machine.

As a point of interest, how long does it take you to do a Dr. Voluptua strip? Or a Puppy Club? Just out of curiosity :)

Man, Josh, I thought you were a longhorn. D:

But more seriously, that was really cool. You really have your shit together and your organization system is so cool.

He is. That's what makes the use of the tamu emblem funny since Bryan/College Station is in "butt-fucking Egypt" as we used to say in high school.

That was cooooool. I would like to see the higher quality one PLEEEEEASE.

Fine work sir!

does Anyone here have an E-MAIL ADRESS for josh LeSnick ?

Again, Is There Any way I could CONTACT Mr.Lesnick ? An E - Mail Adress, perhaps ?

Getting a look at how you put these comics together is fascinating.

I'm curious about the last Refreshments song, "Girly." It describes a cartoonishly violent romance, which would also be a pretty accurate description of the comic that shares its name. Was the song an inspiration at all?
